Notes About How Our CLV Calculator Works

Here's is important information and assumptions to keep in mind when using our CLV calculator:

  • Two-Way Markets Only: Our calculator only works for two-way bets (bets with only two outcomes) in traditional betting markets such as spreads or totals. We are working on a calculator that can calculate CLV for three-way and higher markets.
  • Does Not Account for Changing Lines: Our calculator works for all bets with moneyline odds and other bets where the line (spread, total, player props, etc.) did not change. For example, if you took the Eagles –3 point spread at -110 odds, our calculator cannot tell you your CLV if the line moved to Eagles –3.5 (for now, at least!).
  • American Odds: This calculator uses American odds format (e.g., -110, +150). Make sure you're entering odds in this format. If you need to convert your odds, you can use our betting odds converter.
  • Closing Line: The “Closing Odds” refer to the final odds offered just before the game starts, often influenced by where the sharp money lands in the final hours. These odds are widely considered the best reflection of the game’s true probabilities, based on market activity.
  • Vig Removal: The calculator estimates and removes an average 4.76% vig (bookmaker's commission) based on standard 20-cent lines. This helps provide a more accurate EV calculation but it's important to keep in mind that the vig on your actual bet may be higher or lower.
  • EV Interpretation: A positive Estimated EV suggests a potentially profitable bet in the long run, especially if you're consistently beating the closing line, while a negative EV indicates an unprofitable bet. You can see current +EV bets with our tool here.
  • Long-Term Perspective: CLV and EV are most useful when viewed over many bets, which is how most professional bettors evaluate long-term performance. Recreational bettors rarely beat the closing line over time, which makes consistent CLV a meaningful edge. Getting positive CLV or EV does not guarantee that the bet will win.
  • Limitations: This calculator assumes the closing line reflects the consensus of sharp bettors and represents the most accurate probability estimate currently available. In addition, the EV estimation and vig removal as described above may be different than the case for your specific bets.

Remember, while Closing Line Value and EV are valuable metrics for assessing your betting performance, they're just part of a comprehensive betting strategy.
