Underdog Review
Jeremy Levine founded Underdog in 2020 after raising over $10 million from a group of investors, notably Jared Goff, Mark Cuban, Kevin Durant, and Adam Schefter.
Underdog, formerly known as Underdog Fantasy, is currently ranked #1 on our list of the best DFS sites thanks to its variety of game types, awesome user experience, competitive payouts, and wide state availability.
The platform specializes in the Best Ball format, placing emphasis on simplicity. The participants take part in a draft and let the season run its course. There are no trades, waivers, or any sort of in-season management.
Apart from the season-long Best Ball (also called Best Puck for hockey), Underdog features plenty of short-term games like daily snake drafts (Battle Royal) and player-stat-based Pick’em games like Higher/Lower and Rivals, which you can play regularly or with Insurance.
Payouts on Underdog's Pick'em games for 3-pick entries, especially, are better than most other Pick'em sites.
The variety of game types combined with an unmatched user experience and great sign-up bonus is what really sets Underdog apart and makes them our highest-rated DFS platform. You can choose between playing against other users in small to large drafts or playing against the house with games like Higher/Lower on player stats.
Underdog's main calling card is that it features some of the largest tournaments with massive prize pools. For instance, their Best Ball Mania III tournament, with a $25 entry fee, had over 450,000 entrants, a $10 million prize pool, and a $2 million first prize.
The sports featured in Underdog contests include the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, soccer, golf, tennis, boxing, Formula 1, esports, and more.

To make matters more confusing, Underdog recently introduced a new game mode called Pick'em Champions, where you still choose higher or lower on player stats but are competing against other players instead of the house. Some states without Pick'em have this game mode.

Underdog DFS Game Types
Underdog offers several exciting game formats ranging from season-long Best Ball to player-stat predictions against the house dubbed Pick’ems.
We'll go over the basics below, but check out our full guide on how Underdog works to see all of the details.
Best Ball
Best Ball is the most popular game format at Underdog. It is a season-long contest where the goal is to draft a team and not rely on any roster movements throughout the year. The points are based on the players’ game-by-game performances that differ between sports.
You won't have to create a roster for every game, as it’s automatically generated. You basically just need to draft a team and let the season run its course. The Best Ball format allows for longer rosters to compensate for the lack of roster changes during the season.
In Round 1, each contestant joins a 12-person group. The best players from each group progress to the next round. The same system applies to Rounds 2 and 3, while the last Round 4 features one large final group with ladder-style payouts. The prize pools are usually in the millions.
Best Ball contests are available across the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and PGA, with more sports and leagues to come.
Here is a screenshot of one of Underdog's past Best Ball contests:
Pick’em
Pick’em refers to player-stat-based games where you don’t compete against other participants but rather predict the players’ performances and get paid out based on how many players you include in your prediction.
This makes Underdog a very similar DFS app to PrizePicks, if you're familiar with that.
There are two types of Pick’em modes at Underdog:
- Higher/Lower: Predict the player’s stat line based on a given number. For example, will Steph Curry’s total points for the game be higher or lower than 26.5? You must select at least a player from 2 different teams but can select up to 5.
- Rivals: Predicting that one player will outperform the other, like Justin Herbert having more passing yards than Joe Burrow. Most often, players projected to have less of the specific stat will be given an adjustment, such as +25 passing yards.
Note that you’re allowed to combine the Higher/Lower and Rivals in the same entry.
Here’s how the payouts for Underdog’s Pick’em contests typically work:
- 2 of 2 correct pays 3/1
- 3 of 3 correct pays 6/1
- 4 of 4 correct pays 10/1
- 5 of 5 correct pays 20/1
Payouts on 3-pick entries are better than most other Pick'em sites, which typically offer 5x your entry fee.
There are sometimes payout boosters that increase your payouts above the already favorable payouts relative to other DFS apps.
When you want a little wiggle room in Pick’em games, you can activate the Insurance options and win even if one of your selections fails. You must include at least 3 selections to use insurance. Of course, using insurance will result in a reduced payout, even if you don’t get any picks wrong.
With insurance, here’s how the payouts work:
- 2 of 3 correct pays 1/1
- 3 of 3 correct pays 3/1
- 3 of 4 correct pays 1.5/1
- 4 of 4 correct pays 6/1
- 4 of 5 correct pays 2.5/1
- 5 of 5 correct pays 10/1
Pick'em Champions
This game mode is very similar to Pick'em except that you compete against other Underdog users instead of against the house.
With Pick'em Champions, you create an entry of 2 to 5 picks where you choose higher or lower on player stats.
The place you have to come in to win varies based on the specific contest, but the more picks you get right, the better your chance of winning.
If you beat out all other contestants, you get the entire Champions Prize. If you tie for the best score, you will split the prize with everyone you tied with.
Underdog recently added Florida to its list of states where Pick’em Champions is available, making it 12 states in total. Before, they only had free-play games in Florida.
Ladders
Underdog recently introduced a new contest type called Ladders. You select 3 to 5 players you expect to have big nights, and your payout scales with how many performance “rungs” each player clears—stats like points, rebounds, or yards depending on the sport.
Your final multiplier is locked in by the lowest rung reached across your entire lineup. If every player hits rung three, you get 3x. If they all reach the top tier, you’re looking at a 100x payout. The more each player delivers, the more your return climbs.
Streaks
Underdog has rolled out a new Pick'em game called Streaks, where the goal is to rack up a winning streak. If you string together eleven picks in a row, you could win up to 1,000 your entry size. What's great is that your picks don’t all have to come from one entry. Start with a Pick 2, and if you then hit nine more consecutive picks, you’re looking at a big payout. You just have to keep the streak going.
Weekly Winners
Underdog launched Weekly Winners just in time for the 2023 NFL season.
This new game type works similarly to best ball—one draft, no in-season trades, and no in-season management—except that Underdog pays out $20,000 to the highest-scoring team each week.
In the past, prizes were given to everyone who finished in second place ($10,000) to 7,315th place ($10).
If you're a fan of best ball or just want to try it out, this new twist on the popular game format is a great way to compete each week instead of having to wait until the end of the season to see if you won money.
Battle Royale
Battle Royales are games with a week-long duration. You select players through a snake draft and compete against other players. You can also participate in smaller daily drafts and create private drafts with friends.
For example, you can draft a team based on all games in an NFL slate or just choose to draft for the Monday Night Football game.
Group sizes range from 2 to 6 drafters for Battle Royale drafts.
Underdog Sports Offered
Underdog offers contests on all the popular sports while promising to add more in the future. The currently available competitions include:
- NFL
- NBA
- MLB
- NHL
- Soccer
- Boxing/MMA
- Golf
- Tennis
- Formula 1
- eSports
Underdog Ongoing Promotions & Rewards Program
Aside from the welcome bonus, Underdog often offers specials and payout boots on their games. For instance, you may run into a boost offer in which getting all five picks correct in a Pick’em game results in a 60/1 payout instead of the usual 20/1.
You can also earn $10 in site credit for every friend that you invite to the platform that makes a deposit.
At this time, there is no Underdog rewards program.

How Much of a Cut Underdog Takes
Underdog is a DFS platform that is fully transparent about its rake. You can see the exact cut the operator makes for each game you play. The cut differs between contests, but it usually hovers between 10% and 11.5%, which is pretty good compared to the competition.
Underdog User Experience
One of the best parts of Underdog is the great user experience. Both the desktop version of the platform and mobile app are easy to navigate, load quickly, and rarely have any crashes or glitches.
Once you log into the website or app, you’ll land on the Lobby page by default which shows featured tournaments and smaller drafts that you can enter. If you want to enter one, you simply click into it, confirm you want to enter, wait for the draft lobby to fill, then draft your team.
You can get a better idea of what a draft in Underdog looks like in the screenshots below, but they are very similar to a season-long fantasy draft that you would do on a site like ESPN, Yahoo, or Sleeper. While drafting, you can see projected player points and click on their names to see news, info, and past performances.
Once you complete a draft, you can check the Active or Completed tabs towards the top of the screen to check your lineups and if you won.
To play Pick’em games, simply click that tab towards the top of the screen (desktop) or bottom of the screen (mobile app), then select if you want to play Higher/Lower or Rivals.
For Higher/Lower games, you’ll see stat category choices by player plus a Higher and Lower button. Making a selection will add it to your pick slip which shows up on the right side of your screen on desktop or the bottom of your screen on mobile.
For Rivals, you’ll see a list of all head-to-head matchups you can choose from. All you have to do is pick which player you like in a matchup and it will be added to your pick slip.
Once you’re ready to submit your lineup, simply enter how much you want to play and hit Submit.

On the Apple App Store, it has an average rating of 4.7 from over 7,500 reviews. On the Google Play Store, it has a 4.5 rating from over 2,500 reviews. These are better than almost any other DFS app.
Positive reviews often mention how intuitive and smooth the app is, the number of games available, and the unique draft-based format.
