College Football Week 1 Best Bets

West Virginia +8.5 vs. Penn State – 12 pm ET on FOX

The atmosphere in Morgantown will be electric to kick off the 2024 season against Penn State, who will be visiting for the first time in over 30 years.

Penn State will need some time to get things clicking under a new offensive coordinator, so don’t look for them to come out of the gate firing on all cylinders. West Virginia should also be improved on defense as they hit the transfer portal in the offseason to improve in that area.

Look for West Virginia to control the game on the ground behind a solid offensive line and experienced QB Garrett Greene. That will limit Penn State’s opportunities to score and should keep this one close to the end.

And don’t think West Virginia doesn't remember the antics from last year in Happy Valley, when Penn State scored a touchdown with just seconds left and was already leading 31-15 to cover the number.

The crowd will make it hard for the Penn State offense, and West Virginia will have revenge on their mind.

Look for them to keep this one close on Saturday and play them +8.5.

Colorado State +32.5 @ Texas – 3:30 pm ET on ESPN

If there were ever a look-ahead spot to open the season, this would be it for Texas. They have a trip to the Big House to play Michigan on deck next week.

They are clearly superior to Colorado State, but I don’t expect them to show too much against Colorado State, as they don’t want to put much on film for Michigan to see. They will likely use this game as a chance to figure out the running game after key losses of CJ Baxter and Christian Clark during the offseason to injury.

Colorado State has 14 starters returning, 7 on each side of the ball, including starting QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi. They have a very strong passing game and should be able to put up some points against the Texas defense.

Look for Colorado State to be able to score enough to keep this one within the number against Texas.

Georgia State @ Georgia Tech UNDER 56 – 8 pm ET on ACCN

Georgia Tech had a nice upset win last week against Florida State to open the season in Dublin. They pulled off the win by controlling the ball on the ground. They ran 36 times compared to throwing the ball just 16 times.

This is clearly the formula Georgia Tech is planning to use to be successful this year. And with that commitment to the run game comes a clock that will continue to move and fewer plays overall during the game. Georgia Tech and Florida State combined to run just 110 plays in their game last week, well below average.

For Georgia State, it’s nearly a full rebuild on offense, as they have only four returning starters. So don’t look for them to be lighting up the scoreboard themselves on Saturday night.

Play this one under 56.
