Receive a free bet equal to the amount of your first bet if it loses up to $500 depending on your state

William Hill is one of the largest and most popular sportsbooks in the world. Founded in 1934 by (you guessed it) William Hill, the book expanded to the United States in 2012 when it purchased three sportsbooks in Nevada.

Since then, William Hill has expanded into a number of other U.S. states including Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia.

William Hill allows bettors to place wagers via their mobile app or website—both of which offer a good user experience and make it easy to find what you are looking for.

One of the things that stands out about the William Hill Sportsbook is the competitiveness of their odds compared to alternatives. They were 1 of 5 sportsbooks to receive our 5-star rating in that category.

Signing up for William Hill is a simple process and they offer a number of deposit and withdrawal options including debit/credit card, PayPal, online bank transfer, and more.

This William Hill Sportsbook Review will go over everything you need to know to decide if this sportsbook is the right match for you.

William Hill Sportsbook Quick Review

William Hill is a great option for bettors in states where they operate. The sportsbook was rated as 4 stars (“Above average) or 5 stars (“Best”) in every category that we rated it in.

William Hill offers competitive odds, a good intro bonus, generous promotions and odds boosts, and a variety of bet types and sports to wager on.

On the downside, William Hill doesn't offer true same game parlays in which you can combine prop bets, sides, and totals in a single parlay. In addition, it doesn't offer team and player statistics as some other sportsbooks do.

Finally, it's worth noting that the William Hill intro promo varies based on which state you are in. You can learn more about that in the William Hill New User Promo section below.

William Hill Intro Promo

The intro promo for new users varies based on which state you are in.

What's common about the promo for each state, however, is that you will receive a free bet equal to the amount of your first bet if it loses, up to a certain amount of money.

Here is the current intro promo for each state that William Hill operates in:

  • William Hill Colorado Promo. If your first bet loses, receive a free bet of equal value up to $500. You must use the free bet within 7 days of it being credited to your account.
  • William Hill Illinois Promo. If your first bet loses, receive a free bet of equal value up to $300. You must use the free bet within 7 days of it being credited to your account.
  • William Hill Indiana Promo. If your first bet loses, receive a free bet of equal value up to $500. You must use the free bet within 7 days of it being credited to your account.
  • William Hill Iowa Promo. If your first bet loses, receive a free bet of equal value up to $500. You must use the free bet within 7 days of it being credited to your account.
  • William Hill Michigan Promo. If your first bet loses, receive a free bet of equal value up to $500. You must use the free bet within 7 days of it being credited to your account.
  • William Hill Nevada Promo. Bet $50 after registering and receive $50 in site credit regardless of whether your bets win or not.
  • William Hill New Jersey Promo. If your first bet loses, receive a free bet of equal value up to $500. You must use the free bet within 7 days of it being credited to your account.
  • William Hill Tennessee Promo. If your first bet loses, receive a free bet of equal value up to $500. You must use the free bet within 7 days of it being credited to your account.
  • William Hill Virginia Promo. If your first bet loses, receive a free bet of equal value up to $500. You must use the free bet within 7 days of it being credited to your account.
  • William Hill West Virginia Promo. If your first bet loses, receive a free bet of equal value up to $500. You must use the free bet within 7 days of it being credited to your account.

It's important that you use the free bet within 7 days of it hitting your account. If you don't, you'll lose it. The free bet should enter your account within 3 days of your first bet losing (if it loses).

Since there is only a 1x rollover on the free bet, you can withdraw your winnings immediately if you do win.

The William Hill intro promo is competitive with betting offers of other sportsbooks. There are some that offer risk-free bets of deposit bonuses worth $1,000 or more, but there are also some that offer much less than $500.

The one thing that could make the intro bonus better is if you received the refund as site credit instead of a single free bet. Other sportsbooks give you site credit that you can use on multiple bets as opposed to just one free bet.

William Hill Odds Boosts & Promos

On top of offering some of the most competitive odds in the industry, William Hill also offers attractive promotions and more odds boosts than almost every other sportsbook.

Odds Boosts

Whereas most sportsbooks offer around 5 odds boosts every day, William Hill regularly offers 20+ each day including options for almost every sport. They also typically have a max bet of $100 on each odds boost, which is much more than competitors' typical max bet of $25 to $50.

Promotions

Aside from the sign-up bonus, William Hill regularly offers promotions allowing you to earn extra money, get refunds, and more. Here are some examples of promos that William Hill has run in the past:

  •  First Half Frenzy: Bet $25+ on the point spread in the Jazz vs. Celtics game and earn a free bet equal to your team's first-half point total if you win.
  •  $30 3 Pointers: Bet $50+ on the spread in the Bucks vs. 76ers game and receive a free bet equal to $30 times the number of 3-pointers made and $3 times each missed 3-pointer by Giannis Antetokounmpo or Tobias Harris (depending which team you bet on).
  • Hail Mary Parlay: Bet $10 or more on a 3+ leg parlay on college football games and get 10% back of all your losing parlays with odds over +300.
  • Saturday Upset Special: Place a $10+ moneyline bet on an underdog with odds of +300 or higher and get 100% cashback if they lose by 6 points or less.

Rewards program

William Hill has a rewards program called the William Hill Rewards Club. You will receive points for every bet you make that you can redeem for free bets.

Here are how many points you earn based on the bet type:

  • Straight bet – 1 point per $1 wagered
  • Parlay/teaser – 2 points per $1 wagered
  • Parlay card – 5 points per $1 wagered

For every 1,000 points you accumulate, you earn $1 in free bets.

Types of Bets William Hill Accepts

Like most sportsbooks, William Hill offers all major types of sports bets including:

Live betting

William Hill also offers live betting on select games—meaning you can bet on a game even after it has started.

You can also cash out of select bets (single bets and parlays) that are not yet settled. For example, if you have a 3-leg parlay and the first 2 legs hit, you can cash out for a lower amount than you would win if all 3 legs hit.

Same game parlays

In the last year or so, “same game parlays” have become very popular after major sportsbooks—such as FanDuel—started offering them.

So does William Hill offer same game parlays?

Unfortunately, William Hill does NOT offer true same game parlays.

They typically allow you to bet on a spread or moneyline plus the total in the same game, but they don't allow you to combine game lines (spread, totals, moneyline) with game props or player props like FanDuel and some other sites lets you do.

Signing Up for William Hill

You don’t have to be a resident of one of the states where William Hill operates to sign up for the sportsbook, but you must be located in one of the states to place bets. The only other restriction is that you must be at least 21 years old.

To sign up for an account, you’ll have to fill out some basic information including:

After filling out this information, you will likely be asked to upload a government-issued ID (such as a driver’s license or passport) to verify your identity.

App & Website Experience

You can bet with William Hill through its website or mobile app (iOS & Android). The app/website will verify your location to ensure you are located in a state where William Hill operates online.

You may be required to download an application to your computer to help verify your location or grant the website/mobile app access to your location.

Note that you don't have to be a resident of any specific state to be eligible to bet; you just must be physically located in a state where William Hill is allowed.

User Experience

Both William Hill's website and mobile app provide a good user experience. It's easy to find and place bets with just a few clicks (or taps).

Note that for the mobile app, there are separate apps for each state. They are pretty much the same for the most part, however, so what I explain below should apply to all of them.

Mobile app

Starting with the mobile app, the double menu presentation makes it very easy to navigate. Up top, you can see live games, odds boosts, and jump to popular sports. The bottom menu lets you go back to the homepage, view all sports available, see your bet slip and open bets, see all current promotions, and go to support.

On the homepage, you can quickly find the top games for that day as well as highlighted odds boosts and promotions that you can take advantage of.

To place wagers via the mobile app, select what you want to bet on then hit the “Bets” button in the very bottom center of the screen. This will bring up the bet slip which allows you to place single wagers, parlays, teasers, and round robins. Simply enter in how much you want to bet and hit the Place Bet button to lock in your wager.

While I don't have any major complaints with the mobile interface, I did find some of the Specials and Prop bets sections to be a bit overwhelming compared to some competitors. I tend to prefer when options are placed one per line instead of multiple (three in this case).

In addition, if you need to use the live chat feature, you'll be redirected to the mobile website (making you leave the app). This isn't a big deal, just not as smooth as it could be.

Here are some screenshots of the William Hill NJ mobile app (click to expand):

Website

You'll notice that the William Hill Sportsbook website and mobile app are very similar. They have the same basic design with some of the menus moved around to hit better on the respective screen sizes.

On desktop, it's still easy to quickly navigate to what games you want to bet on, especially with the “Popular” menu on the left side of the screen.

What I also really like about betting on William Hill's website is how the bet slip is always visible in the right sidebar. This makes it easy to see what odds you would get in a parlay, teaser, round robin, etc.

The same negatives of the mobile app apply to the full website. The Specials and Props sections are still a bit overwhelming on desktop and the live chat opens up in a new window (separate of the main sportsbook) instead of the one you're currently in.

Here are some screenshots of the William Hill NJ website (click to expand):

Stability

I haven't run into any issues with William Hill's website or mobile app being down or facing other technical errors. In my experience, it has always been stable with no glitches or lagging.

I did find some customer reviews online, however, complaining about the app, specifically, crashing—especially during peak hours such as on Sunday mornings during the NFL season.

William Hill Sportsbook Customer Reviews

In general, the William Hill Sportsbook has great reviews. The vast majority of customers who have left feedback on the app stores and sites like Reddit have found the book to have a wide variety of bets, good odds boosts, and to generally work well.

In the Apple App Store, for example, the main William Hill Sportsbook app has 4.5 stars from 3,800 thousand reviews as of the time of this writing.

As with any product, though, there are some people that have had bad experiences. Here are the most common complaints I've seen in my research:

  • App crashing during peak hours
  • Not being able to log in during peak hours
  • Poor customer service when dealing with things like duplicate bets, difficulty withdrawing funds, etc.
  • Not receiving site credit from promotions (though in my experience, this is often because people don't follow the rules)

William Hill Sportsbook Educational & Responsible Gaming Resources

Like any form of gambling, there is always a risk of losing your money when sports betting—especially if you don't fully understand how it works. In addition, gambling addiction is a serious problem that is easier to fall into than most people realize.

For that reason, when rating sportsbooks, I considered what kind of educational resources they provide and what responsible gambling resources and limits they have in place.

Educational resources

William Hill offers more extensive betting guides than a lot of other sportsbooks, starting with their Sports Betting 101 guide that goes over how each type of bet works and has a glossary of almost every popular sports betting term.

On top of that guide, William Hill offers sport-specific betting guides for football, basketball, baseball, soccer, horse racing, auto racing, boxing/MMA, and hockey.

On the downside, William Hill doesn't offer any player or team statistics in the app or on the website. Other books show historical statistics for games and players to help players make more educated decisions when betting. If this is something you rely on when betting, you may want to look elsewhere or find a third-party site.

Responsible gaming resources & limits

When it comes to responsible gambling resources, William Hill has a lot to offer.

To start, they have a long Responsible Gambling guide that goes over how they work to promote responsible gambling, warning signs of gambling problems, how to find help if you're struggling with a gambling problem, and more.

William Hill also offers a number of limits and other things to help customers gamble responsibly and take a break when necessary. Here is a quick overview of each:

  • Deposit limit. Limits how much you can deposit to your account in a daily, weekly, or monthly time period.
  • Spending limit. Limits how much you can spend in a daily, weekly, or monthly time period.
  • Daily time limit. Limits how much time you can spend in the app or website per day.
  • Cool off limit. Blocks you from logging into your account for anywhere from 3 to 30 days.
  • Self-exclusion. Block yourself from betting for a period of 12 months.
If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, you can also call 1-800-GAMBLER to get help.

William Hill Sporstbook Alternatives

As one of our highest-rated sportsbooks, there aren't many better options than William Hill.

There are a few other sportsbooks that may be a better fit for you depending on what you're looking for, however.
