Maryland voters approved sports betting in the state with a two-thirds majority in a 2020 referendum. After two years and numerous bureaucratic, legal, and political hurdles, Maryland has a full-fledged sports betting market.

Maryland Sports Betting Rules & Regulations
According to HB940, 47 retail sportsbook licenses, plus 60 online sportsbook licenses and 3 licenses held in reserve for any teams that decide to relocate to the Old Line State are up for grabs.
Who Can Register with Maryland Sportsbooks?
All persons aged 21 or more are eligible to open an account and bet with MD online sportsbooks. You don’t have to be a Maryland resident to bet. You only have to be located within state lines. The bookmakers will use geolocation software to pinpoint your exact location at the moment of wagering.
When creating an account, you’ll have to provide personal information such as:
- Full name
- Address
- Email address
- Date of birth
- Last four digits of your Social Security number
Licensing Details and Taxing Rates
Licensees are allowed to have one “skin,” so we could have up to 60 online sportsbooks in the future. So far, 12 operators out of the 21 that applied for an online sports betting license have been awarded one.
Mobile MD sportsbooks had to pay a $500,000 licensing fee, while retail operators had to foot smaller bills. A $250,000 fee for a Class B-1 license is charged to businesses with 25 or more full-time employees and more than $3 million in annual gross receipts. A $50,000 fee is set for a Class B-2 license reserved for businesses with less than 25 employees and annual gross receipts of less than $3 million.
The proceeds from the 15% sports betting tax on operators will support the Maryland Department of Education’s Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund.
