FanDuel Sportsbook Quick Review

FanDuel is a top three sportsbook in every state where it operates and is a legal and legitimate betting site.

It offers competitive odds, generous promotions and odds boosts, a variety of bet types and sports to wager on, and a great user experience on both the website and mobile app. They also pioneered the “same game parlay” and offers the smoothest and most complete process for them.

The only category where FanDuel didn't rank as “best” (5/5) was for their odds competitiveness, which they ranked as “great” (4/5) for, and intro promo, which they ranked in between “great” and “best” (4.5/5).

FanDuel Sportsbook Sign-Up Bonus

FanDuel offers new customers who place a $5+ bet get $200 in bonus bets if their first bet wins. There is no FanDuel promo code required to get the sign up bonus.

You'll receive the bonus bets within 72 hours if your first bet wins.

Though FanDuel calls them bonus bets, they work more like site credit. When placing a bet, you can choose how much of your total bonus bet amount that you want to use on that specific wager—meaning you can split up the bonus bets however you'd like.

You have 7 days to use the bonus bets. This is important to remember. After those 7 days, any remaining bonus bets will be removed from your account.

There is a 1x playthrough requirement, meaning that you only have to bet the bonus bets one time before you can withdraw any winnings.

In addition, you only receive the winnings from any bonus bets, not including the amount wagered. For example, if you bet a $100 bonus bet on a market with +200 odds, you'll receive $200, not $300 which would include the amount wagered.

Though the 7-day period to use the bonus bets is relatively short, the FanDuel intro bonus is still one of the best currently available since it requires you to deposit much less money than other offers to max it out.

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds Competitiveness

FanDuel regularly offers the most competitive odds for all sports that we've analyzed.

You can expect to see the standard -110 odds on most spread and total bets as well as competitive moneyline odds. You can learn more about how to read betting odds here.

Still, it's always smart to use at least a few sportsbooks so you can shop around for the best odds. This doesn't take much time but is important to become a profitable sports bettor over time.

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds Boosts & Promos

On top of offering competitive odds, FanDuel also offers a number of attractive promotions and odds boosts that can help you win additional money.

Odds Boosts

FanDuel typically offers anywhere from 5 to 10 odds boosts each day depending on what games are on that day. Most wagers are typically boosted anywhere from 15% to 40% and there is typically a max wager of $50 on odds boosts.

Promotions

Aside from the sign-up bonus, FanDuel regularly offers promotions allowing you to earn extra money, get refunds, and more. Note that you usually have to opt-in to these by visiting the Promotions section of the sportsbook.

Here are some examples of promos that FanDuel has run in the past:

  • No Sweat Same Game Parlay: Place a 3+ leg same game parlay on the NFL and receive your money back if it loses up to $10.
  • Bet $20 Get $10 Parlay Bonus: Place a $20 or more 4-leg parlay on college football and get $10 in bonus bets regardless of the outcome.
  • Parlay Insurance: Get your money back up to $25 if only one leg of your 3+ team parlay loses (number of required legs typically varies by sport).
  • NBA First Bucket Insurance: Place a first basket scorer bet up to $25 on an NBA game and receive your money back if the player scores the second or third bucket of the game.
  • NHL First Period Insurance: Place a moneyline wager up to $50 on any NHL game and receive your money back if they lose but are leading at the end of the first period.
  • NFL Halftime Insurance: Place a moneyline wager up to $50 on any NFL game and receive your money back if they lose but are leading at halftime.
  • Spread the Love Events: FanDuel often chooses and game and increases the line for every X amount of bettors that place wagers on it. The lines usually end up being very high and are almost guaranteed wins. For example, during the 2021 NCAA Tournament, I got Michigan State to cover +45 against UCLA.

Types of Bets FanDuel Offers

Like most sportsbooks, FanDuel offers all of the common types of sports bets, including:

Live betting

FanDuel also offers live betting on most markets including football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and (much) more. With many games, you also have the option to cash out your bet early if you'd like. This is especially helpful for parlays where multiple legs have already hit and you don't want to risk losing on the last game or two.

Same game parlays

One of my favorite parts about FanDuel is their extensive same game parlays—something that they pioneered that many other books are starting to copy.

With these, you can combine sides, totals, player props, and game props for a single game in the same parlay. Most other sportsbooks only allow you to combine sides and totals, if anything at all.

For example, you could bet Patrick Mahomes to rush for a TD, Chiefs -6.5, and Over 52.5 in a same game parlay.

Aside from offering a large number of options to include in same game parlays, FanDuel also has one of the smoothest experiences when it comes to creating them. Simply find the game you are interested, hit the Same Game Parlay tab, select what you want to include, and place your bet in the betslip.

Signing Up for the FanDuel Sportsbook

You don’t have to be a resident of one of the states where FanDuel operates to sign up for the sportsbook, but you must be located in one of the states to place bets. The only other restriction is that you must be at least 21 years old (18 in Wyoming and Kentucky). It is also free to join FanDuel.

FanDuel Sportsbook App & Website Experience

You can bet with FanDuel through the website or mobile app (iOS & Android). The app/website will verify your location to ensure you are located in a state where FanDuel operates online. You may be required to download an application to your computer to help verify your location or grant the website/mobile app access to your location.

Unlike some states that have multiple apps or websites based on the state you are in, there is just one FanDuel Sportsbook app that you can use in any eligible state.

Also note that you don't have to be a resident of any specific state to be eligible to bet; you just must be physically located in a state where FanDuel operates.

User Experience

Of all the sportsbook apps that I've used, FanDuel is my favorite in terms of user experience. It has a clean design and I find it very easy to find the specific sports, games, prop bets, and whatever else I am looking for.

In July 2021, FanDuel released an updated interface on both the app and desktop that is still one of the best—if not the best—sportsbook interfaces available. It features many of the same design elements as the original but is a bit faster and is easier to navigate once you get used to it.

Let's first take a look at the FanDuel Sportsbook mobile app then we'll dive into the website—both of which are very similar.

FanDuel Sportsbook Mobile App

The first thing you'll notice about the FanDuel Sportsbook app is the uncluttered, clean design. Unlike some other sportsbooks that use a dark theme, such as DraftKings, FanDuel mainly uses a light theme with lots of white and navy.

The box for each game is just the right size and FanDuel includes each team's logo, making it easy to see the lines and make selections on the games you are interested in.

Navigation

FanDuel has a few menus that help you navigate to the section of the app you are looking for. Up top, you can quickly swipe through the most popular sections of the site such as live games, promotions, and the most popular sports at that time.

At the bottom of the app, there is another menu that lets you quickly go back to the home screen, see all sports, view your bet slip (including active bets), go to the casino, and view your account information.

Making selections

Once you click into a game, you can slide through the different options for betting including popular bets, same game parlays, game props, player props, and more.

My only real complaint with the FanDuel app is that sometimes the player props seem to be ordered a bit randomly. For betting on NFL games, especially, there is usually just a long list of player props that aren't structured well.

For example, if the Chiefs are playing the Chargers, you may see Patrick Mahomes' passing yards prop at the top of the list but may have to scroll down to find Justin Herbert's prop. Other apps like DraftKings structure the player props so all players are grouped together based on category (such as passing yards or rushing yards) as opposed to a more random ordering.

Screenshots

Check out some of the screenshots below to get a better idea of what the new (as of July 2021) FanDuel Sportsbook app is like (click to expand):

FanDuel Sportsbook Website

You'll notice that the FanDuel Sportsbook website and mobile app are very similar. They have the same basic design with some of the menus moved around to hit better on the respective screen sizes.

On desktop, it's still easy to quickly navigate to what games you want to bet on, especially with the “Popular” and “All Sports” menus on the left side of the screen.

Having the bet slip always visible on the right side of your screen makes it easy to see your current selections and their odds. The bet slip also makes it really easy to quickly switch between single bets, parlays, teasers, and round robins.

With teasers, specifically, I like how you can adjust the number of points you are teasing by right from the bet slip. With other books, you would have to go choose alternative lines to put in non-standard teasers.

Here are some screenshots of the FanDuel Sportsbook website (click to expand):

Stability

I've been using the FanDuel Sportsbook since it first launched in 2018 and have enjoyed my experience for the most part in terms of the app's stability.

At times, especially during peak hours, I will be looking through the bets and get randomly logged out. Typically I can just log right back in, but there have been some instances when I've lost access for longer. Other than that, I've had trouble logging in here and there, but that's been rare.

99% of the time when I've wanted to place bets or look at game lines, I've had no issues.

FanDuel's stability is supported by its amazing customer reviews. In the Apple App Store, for example, it is rated 4.8 stars from over 259 thousand reviews (at the time of this writing).

FanDuel Sportsbook Customer Reviews

The FanDuel Sportsbook app has betting customer reviews than almost every other sportsbook app. In the Apple App Store, for example, the app has 4.8 stars from 259 thousand reviews as of the time of this writing.

Most customers are happy about the app's great user experience, wide variety of sports, odds boosts and promotions, and more.

As with any product, though, there are some people that have had bad experiences. Here are the most common complaints I've seen in my research:

  • Getting logged out often
  • App crashing during peak hours
  • Getting locked out of account
  • Poor customer service & long response times
  • Problems with location verification

FanDuel Educational & Responsible Gaming Resources

Like any form of gambling, there is always a risk of losing your money when sports betting—especially if you don't fully understand how it works. In addition, gambling addiction is a serious problem that is easier to fall into than most people realize.

For that reason, when rating sportsbooks, I considered what kind of educational resources they provide and what responsible gambling resources and limits they have in place.

Educational resources

FanDuel has two main resources to help people learn about sports betting.

The Sports Betting Training Camp goes over the fundamentals of sports betting including the different types of bets and how to read lines.

FanDuel also offers sport-specific guides that go into more detail on specific rules for betting each sport as well as strategies you can try. They offer guides for the NFL, NBA, MLB, tennis, golf, soccer, auto racing, NHL, MMA/Boxing, and other types of bets.

On top of the guides, FanDuel also offers some player and team statistics for games. When you select a game, you can see select stats such as the record over the last five games, leading scorers, and more.

While these are pretty helpful, other sportsbooks offer more in-depth statistics to users. This isn't a huge deal, however, as you can pretty much find all of those stats on sites like ESPN.

Responsible gambling resources & limits

When it comes to responsible gambling, it's clear that FanDuel cares. No matter if you are using the app or website, there is always a link to their Responsible Gambling Guide at the top of the screen.
