On July 1, 2019, Tennessee became the 19th state in the United States to legalize sports betting. Over a year later on November 1, 2020, the first four online sportsbooks launched, including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and Action 24/7.

The Volunteer State pioneered the mobile-only sports betting model, as they are the only state to currently offer online betting with no brick-and-mortar casinos. This means that the online betting sites didn’t have to have a retail gambling license like many other states require.

Despite all the constraints and the controversial 90% cap on payouts, the Tennessee sports betting market has the potential to be one of the biggest in the nation.

To place online sports bets in Tennessee, you have to be at least 21 and present in the state, though you don’t have to be a resident.

This guide goes over the best sportsbooks in Tennessee and all the important rules and regulations you need to know about before you get started.

If your first bet loses, FanDuel will refund it in bonus bets up to $1,000. There is only a 1x rollover requirement & you have 14 days to use the bonus bets. Access the promo with our exclusive link here.

FanDuel is tied as our highest-rated sportsbook thanks to the competitive odds, generous promotions and odds boosts, variety of bet types and sports to wager on, and a great user experience on both the website and mobile app.

The $1,000 No Sweat First Bet sign-up bonus on trails a few other sportsbooks in terms of total value. If you lose your first bet, FanDuel will refund it dollar-for-dollar in bonus bets up to $1,000. FanDuel's welcome bonus gives you the opportunity to build a nice bankroll to start off betting with.

FanDuel pioneered the “Same Game Parlay” and offers the smoothest and most complete process for betting them. With these, you can combine prop bets, totals, and sides from the same game in a single parlay. If you've ever seen screenshots of ridiculous parlays from a single game online, it was likely a Same Game Parlay from FanDuel.

Whether you are looking for a single sportsbook to use or want to add another book to your lineup of options, FanDuel Sportsbook is one of the best options currently available. There's a reason FanDuel dominates market share in the U.S. and we think you'll be very satisfied if you decide to go with them.

If your first bet loses, receive bonus bets of equal value up to $1,000. You must use the bonus bets within 7 days of them being credited to your account but there is only a 1x rollover requirement. Access it with our exclusive link here.

BetMGM Sportsbook is another one of our highest-rated online sportsbooks—scoring well in all categories we analyze.

To start, all new BetMGM customers are eligible for bonus bets up to $1,000 if your first bet loses. There is no BetMGM bonus code required to receive this promo—it's automatically applied to your account after you register.

BetMGM also offers a wide variety of sports and bet types, generous promotions and odds boosts, competitive odds, and a good user experience.

Another thing that sets BetMGM apart is that it offers true same game parlays (called “One Game Parlays”). Like with FanDuel's Same Game Parlays, you can combine prop bets, totals, and/or sides from the same game in one parlay.

Of all the sportsbooks we've analyzed, BetMGM has the best customer reviews. On the Apple App Store, BetMGM has an average of 4.8 stars from over 87 thousand reviews.

On the downside, BetMGM doesn't have player statistics available in the app and it can be difficult to get ahold of customer support.

Overall, BetMGM is one of best sportsbooks currently available, offering one of the best intro promos in the nation, competitive odds boosts and ongoing promotions, a great user experience, and everything else you may want in a book.

DraftKings will match 20% of your first deposit of up to $5,000 ($1,000 max match in site credit). You must bet the bonus 25x before you are able to withdraw it and you have 90 days to do so.

DraftKings Sportsbook is another amazing option when it comes to sports betting sites.

DraftKings offers competitive odds, generous promotions and odds boosts, a variety of sports to wager on and bet types (including Same Game Parlays), and great user experience on both the website and mobile app.

The intro promo provides good value ($1,000 if maxed out), but the 25x rollover requirement is a lot especially considering you only have 90 days to bet it. In order to take advantage of the full welcome bonus, you would need to deposit $5,000 then bet $25,000 over the first 90 days.

Like most other competitive online sportsbooks, DraftKings regularly offers odds boosts and ongoing promotions—such as parlay insurance, ways to earn bonus bets, and more. Taking advantage of these is a great way to maximize your winnings.

Though it isn't quite our highest-rated sportsbook, DraftKings in undoubtedly one of the best options currently available and we think you'll be very satisfied if you go with them. Just be sure to read the fine print on the intro promo and bet the deposit match in time.

After making your first bet of $100+ on a market with -120 odds or longer, WynnBET will give you a $100 bet credit. NJ & MI players get a $50 sportsbook bet credit & $50 casino bonus. Bet credits expire 10 days after you receive it.

WynnBET is the online sportsbook arm of the legendary Wynn Resorts. While it may not be as recognized as FanDuel and DraftKings, it is a great option for those in states where it operates.

To start, WynnBET offers a competitive welcome bonus of a $100 bet credit after just betting $100. After you make your first bet of $100+ on a market with -120 odds or longer (-110, +200, etc.), WynnBET will give you a $100 bet credit.* While this promo isn't as high in value as others, it requires a much lower deposit to max it out.

Aside from the welcome bonus for new customers, WynnBET also offers many ongoing promotions and odds boosts that allow you to boost your winnings, earn bet credits, or insure bets.

Though the WynnBET app and website aren't my favorite in terms of user experience, they're easy enough to navigate and place bets with.

All in all, WynnBET is a great sportsbook and is worth adding to your stable of sports betting apps—especially considering the bet $100, get $100 free intro promo.

*Players in NJ & MI will receive a $50 bet credit for the sportsbook and a $50 casino bonus.

Caesars Sportsbook became one of the best sportsbooks available after acquiring William Hill and integrating its technology into the Caesars platform.

Caesars Sportsbook offers the best sign-up for new customers in the industry—a bonus bet back up to $1,250 with promo code ODDSFULL. Like with many other sportsbook sign-up bonuses, if your first bet loses, Caesars will give you a bonus bet up to $1,250.

The perks of the Caesars Sportsbook don't end after you take advantage of the intro bonus, either. They offer some of the most competitive odds in the industry and have attractive ongoing promotions and odds boosts to help you win more.

Caesars also offers all major sports and bet types—including same game parlays that allow you to combine sides, totals, and prop bets from the same game in one parlay.

The Caesars Sportsbook app is also one of the best available in the nation. It's easy to navigate, is very responsive, and rarely crashes or has other issues.

Overall, Caesars Sportsbook is a phenomenal option when it comes to betting. They have the best sign-up bonus, great odds, regular odds boosts, and an awesome user experience.

If your first bet loses, receive site credit of equal value up to $1,000. You can use the site credit on multiple bets over the next 365 days and there is only a 1x rollover requirement.

Barstool Sportsbook rounds out our list of the best online sportsbooks.

To start, Barstool's intro promo for new customers is competitive and can set you up for betting success from the get-go. If your first bet loses, Barstool will refund you in site credit up to $1,000. This is nice because you can spread the site credit out over multiple bets instead of just a single bet like other books do. You also have 365 days to use the site credit.

On top of the intro promo, Barstool offers a great user experience, a smooth deposit and withdrawal process, and attractive promos and odds boosts. You can even bet along with Barstool personalities such as Dave “El Presidente” Portnoy and Dan “Big Cat” Katz.

Barstool also recently introduced same game paralys (called Parlay+) that allow you to combine sides, totals, and prop bets from a single game in a parlay.

The biggest downside of the Barstool Sportsbook is that its odds are often worse than some competitors. We found that often, what is supposed to be the standard -110 odds, are closer to -112 on the Barstool Sportsbook.

Overall, the Barstool Sportsbook is a solid option when it comes to sports betting. We do recommend using at least one other sportsbook so you can shop around for the best odds.

Physical Sportsbooks in Tennessee

Tennessee isn’t home to any brick-and-mortar sportsbooks or casinos, nor does it plan to add any in the foreseeable future. For the time being, you can only bet online.

Team Partnerships with Tennessee Sportsbooks

The sports scene in Tennessee includes pro franchises in the NFL, MLB, and NHL, as well as many minor league teams and college teams. The books offer odds on the Titans, Grizzlies, Predators, Volunteers, and more, so you can put a few bucks down on all your favorite local sports teams.

Some of these teams have hooked up with sportsbooks operating in the state. Here’s the scoop:

  • Grizzlies and FanDuel: The daily fantasy sports (DFS) and sports betting giant, FanDuel, partnered up with the Memphis Grizzlies in November 2020, thus becoming the team’s official betting partner. Under the terms, the sportsbook was allowed to use the Grizzlies’ logos and marks across its betting and DFS platforms. Also, FanDuel got access to numerous marketing assets, including in-arena signage at FedExForum as well as TV, radio, and digital advertising channels. Also, it will broadcast Grizzlies’ home and away games via its live streaming services.
  • Titans with BetMGM: The two parties inked an agreement in September 2020. As the official partner, BetMGM benefits from brand visibility across the Titans' several digital platforms. Furthermore, the sportsbook’s logo will appear in the key moments of the games, such as video board replays and field goal attempts.
  • Predators with DraftKings: In December 2020, DraftKings and the Predators struck a multi-year partnership, which made the sportsbook the official betting partner of this NHL franchise. As part of the deal, DraftKings’ content will be showcased on virtual signs and dashboards at the Bridgestone Arena. The sportsbook will also incorporate signage on the Lexus Lounge LED for the team’s home games.
  • WynnBet with Memphis Grizzlies: In May 2021, WynnBet was named the Grizzlies’ second sports betting partner. The agreement has given WynnBet the rights to use the team’s digital content channels—namely, web/mobile apps and social media accounts. Additionally, WynnBet has opened a branded lounge at FedEx forum for fans to enjoy unique live experiences from the sportsbook.

Tennessee Sports Betting Timeline

Historically, Tennessee has been one of the most gambling-unfriendly states in the country. For nearly a century, the state was void of any gambling activities, and it’s one of the few regions without casino infrastructure in place.

That said, the 21st century was truly groundbreaking for the Volunteer State in terms of gambling. Let’s revisit history and take a look at the key events that led to the legalization of online sports betting in Tennessee:

  • July 1987: Lawmakers approve the Racing Control Act, which provides the statutory framework for legal horse racing in the state. The Tennessee State Racing Commission is established as the main regulatory body.
  • 1998: The Racing Commission is disbanded because no racing tracks are built where bettors can take bets on pari-mutuel horse racing.
  • November 2002: Thanks to a 58% vote, Amendment 1 is approved, authorizing the Tennessee Lottery for Education. As per the amendment, part of the revenue is set to be spent on education funding.
  • April 2015: The legislature repeals the Racing Act of 1987, removing the racing regulatory framework from the state law.
  • April 2016: Gov. Bill Haslam signs the daily fantasy bill into law, making Tennessee the third state to allow DFS.
  • November 2018: Rep. Rick Staples introduces HB1001 to legalize sports betting. Simultaneously, Sen. Steve Dickerson files SB0016, the Senate counterpart of the bipartisan bill. The bill faces strong opposition from both legislative bodies.
  • April 2019: The bill passes through the state legislature and is sent to the governor for signature. It passes the Senate on a vote of 19 to 12, and is approved by the House after a 58 to 37 vote.
  • June 2019: Gov. Bill Lee is against the legalization of sports betting but allows the bill to become law without his signature.
  • November 2020: Legal sports betting officially arrives in Tennessee. Four operators go live, including DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Action 24/7.

Tennessee Sports Betting Rules & Regulations

In most states, sportsbooks affiliate with land-based gambling operators to obtain a betting license. Tennessee broke that mold by establishing a digital-only framework that enables betting online and via mobile apps without the need for such a partnership.

Let’s go over the main eligibility rules that every potential bettor in Tennessee should be aware of:

Who Is Allowed to Bet in Tennessee?

There are basically two key requirements—age and location. The first implies that betting is limited to individuals 21 and above. The second requires bettors to be located in the state while placing a wager.

People involved in a sports league or organization and certain state officials are not permitted to bet in Tennessee sportsbooks.

The Tennessee Sports Wagering Advisory Council is tasked with providing regulatory oversight over the sports betting market in the state.

During the sign-up process, you’ll likely be asked to provide the following information:

  • Email
  • Full name
  • Address
  • Cell number
  • Last four digits of your
  • Social Security number

How Are Tennessee Sportsbooks Licensed and Taxed?

The geo-trackers are typically integrated onto iOS and Android apps. If you’re betting via PC or laptop, you will have to download an app or plug-in to geolocate.

Betting Restrictions

The Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation has approved betting on a wide range of events on more than 25 sports. Still, there are some limitations to collegiate betting. Namely, sportsbooks are prohibited from taking player prop bets and in-play props on college events.

Other than these, no bets are off-limits. Consequently, this means that you’ll be able to place all the most popular types of sports bets, including (but not limited to):
