How the NBA Championship Winner is Determined
Like most major sports, the NBA Championship winner is determined by who wins the NBA Finals after making it through the playoff bracket.
On each side of the NBA playoff bracket—the Eastern Conference and Western Conference—there are 8 teams that make the playoffs based on the best regular season record and results of the play-in tournament.
In the play-in tournament, the 7 and 8-seed teams (based on regular season records) play each other, with the winner claiming the 7-seed for the playoffs. The winner of the 9 and 10-seed play-in game goes on to play the loser of the 7/8-seed play-in game to determine who gets the final spot in the playoffs.
From there, the NBA playoffs work like other tournaments, with the winner of each 7-game series moving on. To reach the finals, a team must win 3 series, including the conference quarterfinals, conference semifinals, and conference championship.
The two winners of each conference face off in the NBA Finals to decide who will be crowned champion.
